Second Thoughts and Scotch

This blog is the culmination of having far too many opinions on the arts not to commit them to some form of public forum. The scope will be wide, as wide as my interests take me. I visit the cinema at least once a week and try to watch more movies at home, alongside a variety of TV shows. When I visit the theatre, I shall comment. When I complete a book, then too shall I share my thoughts.

For each review, I aim to rate the piece being explored out of 5. My sister has a very specific system with great clarity on what each of her 1-5 grades represents; mine are more liberally spiced. A 5* means excellent, a 1* means poor; between those, a gently sliding scale.

I aim to face each art form on its own terms, within my experience, and rate with a distinct mindset. Yet, I also aim to rate with a slant towards my own personal enjoyment, rather than holistic stars for intrinsic artistic merits. Ultimately, it is a score of 1-5; I imagine you can cope.

Please, do contact me with any thoughts. Maybe you whole-heartedly agree with a review and wish to lend your support. Perhaps you have found my review misguided and you would like take me down a peg or two. Possibly you wish to send me an unrelated anecdote about the time you met Michael Caine. All contributions made in good humour are welcome and will be (most likely) responded too - especially the latter sort.

E. J. O. Cruxton

Residing in Birmingham, E. J. O. Cruxton is a composer and author. He has written the librettos and scores to several operetta and musicals, all performed by West Midland-based companies over the last decade. Recently he has begun writing novels and is looking for professional representation to help them on their way to publication.

In his spare time, Cruxton enjoys nothing more than exploring and consuming the various forms of art available. He is an avid-cinema goer and film buff. Alongside this, he watches quality TV obsessively and is a keen patron of the theatre. The ends of his evenings are reserved for reading, taking in a variety of genres as they fall from his library's shelves.

Most importantly, perhaps, is his deep and profound respect for the arts of brewing and whisky distilling.
